In Defense of Older Directors

THE CASE FOR CONTINUITY

There is much discussion about the tenure of directors - whether longer service diminishes independence or inhibits the board's ability to refresh itself. These questions are valid, but rigid one-size-fits-all answers are not.  Based on my more than 30 years of experience serving on company boards, the best boards are a mix of 'continuity', or longer serving,  directors and 'newbie' directors. Newbies bring fresh thinking and more diversity, while continuity directors bring more knowledge of the company's businesses as well as history. Read more here...

BEING INSPIRED BY OUR MEMBERS

Our members never cease to amaze me. We are a collective group of immensely intelligent and talented women who not only recognize our need inside corporate boardrooms but have the fortitude to do the work to get there. Don't get me wrong, it is not uncommon to waiver on a personal board journey and wonder, "Do I have what it takes?" Our job is to pull those strengths out of each member and present them as being as board-ready on paper as they really are and give them tools to project it with confidence. More times than not, our members impress me with their dedication to their professional goals and how they can see their board aspirations realized despite busy personal and professional lives.  And to see women empowering other women  to realize their own success is what makes my job all worth it!

This is why I am so excited for our annual Board Assembly on October 23rd. The room will be packed with experienced female corporate board directors as well as those looking to gain a seat at the table.  They will be able to share their experiences and wisdom with one another.  And in an effort to involve men in our mission to see more women on corporate boards, we are encouraging men with corporate board service to attend as well.  It should be an evening that will inspire all attendees and most definitely myself.  To find out more about the Board Assembly, click here.
